Fire at home

Working smoke alarms and a practised escape plan save lives.

Before

  • Fit a smoke alarm on every floor and test it monthly.
  • Plan an escape route and a second one. Keep keys where everyone can find them.
  • Take care with cooking, candles, heaters and chargers left on overnight.

If there is a fire

  • Get out, stay out, call 999. Do not stop for belongings.
  • Keep low under smoke. Close doors behind you.
  • If you cannot get out, get into a room with a window, put bedding along the bottom of the door, call 999 and signal for help.

Checked against official guidance on 28 Oct 2026. In immediate danger, call 999.
